Frequently Asked Questions

Asking questions is a part of the learning process, for both the builder and the customer. Questions help dissolve ambiguity and help to ensure that all involved are in a congruent and harmonious place.

Building a home can be hard work: there are many detailed steps that need to be taken, a lot of homework to be done, and budgeting involved. However, it’s our goal at A3 Custom Homes, LLC, to make it as easy as possible. Building the home of your dreams is a bit different than buying a production home, with a few extra hoops to jump through and some nuances that come with anything-goes opportunities. If you’re brimming with questions, you’re not alone.

Below you will find some of the questions that are frequently asked by our customers before, during and after the building process. We invite you to read through them, but certainly if you have any questions that are not answered on this page, please contact us so that we may help assist you.

What is the biggest difference between you and your competition?

We build the highest quality homes while making the experience itself, of building a custom home, enjoyable. We build relationships with our clients and work together towards accomplishing the mutual goal of building the custom home of our clients’ dreams.

Where do you build?

As your local luxury home builder and designer, we are proud to serve the greater Charlotte metropolitan area’s neighborhoods and families. We’re rooted in the local community, with deep ties to this beautiful and vibrant place we call the Queen City. We’ve built homes for clients throughout area including Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, Ft. Mill, Lake Wylie, Mooresville, Lake Norman, Weddington, Marvin and the inclusive areas.

What is the typical price range for your homes?

At A3 Custom Homes, we choose not to be defined by the size or the price of our homes, but rather the high level of service we provide regardless of those variables. With this said, the majority of homes that we build begin at the $500’s and go upwards of $2 milion.

How long does it take to build a custom home?

Very good question. Most of the projects that we undertake at A3 Custom Homes are completed between 9 and 24 months, depending on size, permits, architectural review and weather.

Will A3 Custom Homes provide me with a list of references that I can contact?

Absolutely, at your request, we will provide you with a list of homeowner references. We pride ourselves on our high-quality craftsmanship, attention to detail, and building personal relationships during the design and building process, which we maintain through warranty and beyond. We also have a variety of testimonials and comments on our website from some of our clients.

What should I bring to my first meeting with you?

Your first meeting can be just a preliminary meeting if you’d like to get some questions answered, or we can get started on as many details as you’d like. If you have ideas or a floor plan in mind already, it helps to bring those for us to see and go over with you.

Will you build on my existing homesite?

Yes. If you own an existing lot, we will be glad to meet with you and discuss a custom project on your property. If you are looking for a lot we can also help you choose one in the right neighborhood for your needs.

If I am buying my own homesite, what questions do I need to ask?

Before buying land to custom build a home, there are a few things you should ask:

  • Are there utilities on site such as water, sewer, gas, and electric?
  • Is the property zoned for residential
  • Does the township charge for tap fees?
  • Can a septic tank even be approved for the soil type of this property?
  • What type will be required?
Can I visit my home while it is under construction?

We know that building a home can be a very excited time for our customers, and we welcome visits to see the “progress” of your home. We do ask that given the current health crisis that you please take necessary precautions when visiting while workers are on property. Social distancing is appreciated. We also ask that because of OSHA regulations you have proper hard-hat protection while you are on site at any time.

Why should I buy a custom home?

Simply put: A custom home build ensures you’re getting exactly what you want and the best quality-design-cost value for your land. If you have specific, must-have design features, floor plans, and styles in mind – you won’t find what you’re looking for in a master-planned community.

Is there a difference between buying aspec home and a custom home?

A spec house is a home built without a specific owner in mind. Its style and product options will be a blend of what the builder believes the market wants. You may be able to choose from a couple of options from provided plan layouts, products, and colors, but otherwise will be limited in your ability to customize. The resulting home can be great—but without being tailored to your wishes and needs, clients often find themselves “wishing” for more. In addition, in many cases, the house will be built to code but without additional thought to comfort, view, or quality (Where do you want your outlets? Do you have enough lights in the right places? Are your windows the right size to take advantage of your view and do they open the way you want? Will your washer and dryer fit the space?)

Is it more expensive to build a custom home than a production home?

Not necessarily. It depends on your tastes and the choices you make for your home. A production home builder may choose finishes or products that are less expensive to keep the price competitive, if you choose the same quality of finishes and materials, your home would be in the same price range.

In many cases, production home builders purchase bulk quantities of inferior materials, cabinets and flooring giving the illusion of value to the cutomer. In many cases, customers find themselves replacing and repairing items much sooner than if they had built a custom home to begin with.

Can we use our own contacts for supplies, materials and labor?

We have relationships with the best vendor and sub-contractors in the area that are dedicated to giving us the best service and the best price. Many of these artisans and craftsman have been with us for decades. These relationships allow us to build you the best home possible, on budget and on time. We highly discourage the use of suppliers and subs from the outside.

How do your costs compare with other builders?

Our pricing is in line with similar quality builders. We build enough volume that allows us to maintain strong relationships with our suppliers to keep your costs down. You don’t need to worry that your end price is going to be dramatically different than your expectation.
